 About the Micro-Chipping Procedure

Your new pet can be micro-chipped right here at Animal Control.

The micro chipping process is very short. It takes only a couple of seconds to do the micro-chipping and the rest of the time spent is filling out the paperwork, which should take but 10 minutes.

By the end of the day your pet will be registered onto the National Database. The micro-chip is about the size of a grain of rice(12mm.)  It's so small your pet won't even know that it's in place.

Once inserted, the micro-chip cannot move about or be seen, but can be read by a scanner through the skin. It is injected with a scalpel sharp, sterile needle under the skin of the neck, between the shoulder blades, in a simple and quick procedure, just like an ordinary injection.

During the procedure the owner will keep the pet calm and focused on some nice treats.

Common questions about micro-chipping

Why should I micro-chip?

Every day unidentified pets are humanely destroyed in animal shelters throughout the country. Many could have been reunited with their worried owners if identification had been possible. Collars can break and identification tags fall off and get lost. For one payment of $25, your new pet can be micro-chipped and your details logged into a central database for life, raising the chance that you and your beloved pet will be reunited.

If your pet is lost, stolen or has run away, with a micro chip fitted, you will be contacted as soon as your pet is found.  There are hundreds of thousands of scanners in use all over the country, at rescue centers, vets, animal controls and police, which can read the unique code stored in the microchip. It is then a simple process of looking up the owner details stored in the Database. This will confirm your contact details and you will be reunited with your pet. Micro-chipping is a harmless and permanent way to identify your pet .

Can my pet be micro-chipped?

It is possible for almost any type of animal to be implanted with a microchip. Dogs, cats, puppies, kittens and rabbits can all be micro-chipped in a matter of minutes. No anaesthetic is required. For pets such as birds and reptiles the procedure is a little different and may require sedation, so we recommend you turn to your local vet for them.

Is it painful for my pet to be micro-chipped?

It is not painful for the animal to be micro-chipped or to have the micro-chip in place. The injection of the micro-chip can be compared to us getting a paper cut, due to the sharpness of the needle.

This really is a worthwhile exercise, but a collar and tags are a great alternative.  The tags can break or be lost and that is where having a micro-chip can help.

Micro-chipping is highly recommended by animal Control.
